Dealing with race

Our oldest daughter is adopted, she is African-American. We’ve had her since she was five days old, (she’s 5 1/2 now) but there are still issues that arise because she notices that she is ‘different’.

At times there have been comments, suggestions, jokes and situations which have made her feel uncomfortable and she’s mentioned at times that she wants “hair like mommy’s” or she’s asked “why do I have brown skin.”

So I’ve been doing some research on groups, resources, etc. for African-American children and interracial families. I want my daughter to know how special she is and to have pride and confidence in her ‘differences’. I want her to be her, unique and special.

I hope my research can help others who might have interracial families.

There is the Genesis group, which is for African-American members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. They meet once a month on the first Sunday.

I’ve found a list of books that I’m adding to my To Read list- I’m mostly putting this here for my benefit, but hopefully it may help some of you.

  1. thats terrific that your reading these books. too often people don’t take care to learn more about other cultures in inter-racial adoptions.

    are you looking to learn more about black culture or black children, i think i might have some book ideals depending on your interest :)
